eco-friendly school

hmad|architects created an innovative and sustainable eco-school space using reused and recycled materials that were sourced locally for this project. Our client was a primary school in Devon that required a covered outdoor space to act as an extension to the indoor classrooms.

Our design incorporated gently curving roof profiles at different levels to maintain light access and visibility to the surroundings within the space, with a roof constructed entirely of timber with the exception of a small amount of metal strengthening. The roof finish is sedum, a specially chosen plant used for 'green' roofs. At the perimeter of the canopy, the floor drops away in several stages to form seating to a small outdoor theatre.

We are delighted that our client was happy with the low cost and highly functional bespoke space that was created without disruption to the running of the school.
