sense resource centre

hmad|architects were commissioned by Sense, the national charity supporting the deafblind, to reorder and refurbish their existing Exeter property to create a sensory resource centre and community cafe.

We worked closely with Sense to understand how the specific needs of the users should influence the architecture in delivering this exciting but challenging project. Our design provided a staff room as well as bespoke facilities for Sense's own clients, with which we adopted an approach of 'sensory stimulation': bright colours and feature lighting were incorporated throughout in addition to details such as discrete braille labelling to door handles and illuminated colour coded light switches.

In 2016, seven years after the building was completed, it "continues to be a pleasure to work in".

Manager, Sense Resource Centre.
